10.18 Stories We Don't Tell

Another year, another season of Stories We Don’t Tell has come to a close. We’re officially on summer vacation until September, and it’s time to party. Well, maybe not party, but you get the idea. Really, the summer hiatus has been a great opportunity to take a step back, look at what worked, what didn’t work. Implement and develop new ideas. Let me tell you, we have something in the works that is pretty incredible, and unlike anything that we’ve undertaken yet.

10.17 The Inbetweeners

This whole thing is going to make me sound old. Mainly because I am getting old and am proud to wear this as a badge of honour, so whatever.

A couple of weekends ago, I went to see a movie, like in the theatre. I don’t think I can ever go and see a movie in a theatre again. I think I’m done with it. I went by myself, which is not a product of me being older and more comfortable with myself and therefore fine with doing things on my own. I’ve always done this - it’s easy, try it sometime.

10.16 Dispatches: It Never Gets Easier!

Ain’t that the truth? Usually, when you work really hard at something, it does get easier. Of course this is true, however, this can also mean you’re not necessarily getting better at whatever thing you’re working on. I think to truly deepen your work and evolve as an artist, unfortunately, at least for me, there is the continual requirement to put yourself in increasingly uncomfortable situations.

I’m mainly talking about writing and storytelling in front of audiences. I do see how things could be easy. In classes and workshops I’ve taken, there was always talk of finding your ‘writing voice’. Essentially, a writing style that is uniquely yours. This takes an enormous amount of work.

10.15 Awful Sound

What is it about certain songs? You know which ones I mean. The songs that stick with you, trigger certain feelings when combined with specific experiences. They get lodged in our brains, stored away to be released at exactly the right time.

I don’t know why, but the song Awful Sound by Arcade Fire gets me every time. I have listened to it probably a million times, but every once in a while, it knocks me right over. I’ve even already written a blog post about this before.
