1.32 Taking the Ice

TORONTO, ONTARIO: A new book about figure skating in Canada hits the shelves by Pj Kwong. Taking the Ice offers stories from Canada’s figure skating heroes throughout the years all the way up to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. You might think you know these skaters, but Pj has a way of getting under the skin of their stories and the athletes reveal new personal and professional insights. Pj, the figure skating expert, is the perfect guide into the world of this unique sport. What constitutes a figure skating expert? Pj was a former skater and has been a coach for over 20 years. She has been the in-house announcer at many national and international skating events, including the last five Olympic Games. Pj provides commentary for CBC’s Bold channel and is the online figure skating analyst at cbcsports.ca.

I think that about covers the expert part.

The next logical step for Pj was to share her considerable knowledge about the sport. The book covers the athletic achievements of your favorite skaters. She also pulls back the curtain, explores who they are as people and reveals intimate experiences that provide insights into what makes these spectacular athletes tick. There is a rich tradition of groundbreaking coaches in Canada and they share their backstories and experiences of working with world champions. Pj also investigates the controversial 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and the series of events that changed the sport forever.

It is a privilege for me to work alongside Pj as a colleague. I get to see first hand the impact and positive mark she makes on the lives of the kids she teaches. Figure skating has been a part of her entire life, and she has been an ambassador in support of Canadian athletes around the world.

Taking the Ice is about skating in Canada, but there is something else that seeps in between the lines. Pj’s voice and independent spirit shines through in her rendering of other people’s stories. Her passion and expertise are on display and she intimately explores why and how these athletes have captured the hearts and imaginations of people the world over.
